Wireless Transceiver Design:Mastering the Design of Modern Wireless Equipmentand Systems
Many functional RF blocks are available as off the shelf super-components. This chapter discusses in detail the theory related to some of the most important functional RF blocks. It discusses the low noise amplifier (LNA) principles by considering CMOS LNA topologies. The chapter provides a simple introduction to the noise analysis of two-port networks, and considers the noise properties of Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MOSFETs) in particular. It explores the matching options of LNAs, and analyzes the performance of different LNA architectures. The basic noise model of MOSFET consists of two noise sources such as drain noise and gate noise. The capacitive coupling between the channel noise and the gate noise implies that the two sources are correlated. The chapter considers four single-ended architectures, namely resistive termination, common gate configuration, shunt-series feedback, and inductive source degeneration. The series resonant circuit at the LNA input results in a higher effective transconductance.
