This book describes the results of a systematic investigation of thepiezojunction effect in silicon. The aim of this investigation is twofold: Firstly,to find techniques which reduce the affects of mechanical stress for the accuracyand long-term drift of analogue precision circuits, such as bandgap referencesand monolithic temperature transducers. Secondly, to find how thepiezojunction effect can be applied for the design of novel mechanical sensors.This chapter summarizes the previous research on the piezojunction effect.Next, it introduces the reader to the general aspects of the piezojunction effectand its consequences for circuits and sensors. The chapter ends with themotivation and the book structure.
