High-speed transmission of binary data has converged to a general class of low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) that presents unique challenges to the designer. This handbook is a compilation of application notes for data transmission above 30 Mbps using an LVDS electrical layer. What is LVDS? Where should it be used? What are its benefits? What are its limitations? Answers to these and other questions are the subject of this document. This guide examines the details of low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) and provides applications information to help designers use these devices. This document looks at TI’s broad selection of discrete LVDS devices ranging from single-channel drivers and receivers to serialization devices that significantly reduce the cabling, connector, and component costs required for today’s interface solutions. However, before exploring the details of LVDS, step back first and look at data transmission in general, and see where LVDS fits in.
