Although the origin of switching power converters is lostin antiquity, some early machines have been identified thatwork on this principle. Among the first was the hydraulicimpulse pump, in use centuries before the use of electricity(see Figure 1). This device allows some of the energyin the stream of water flowing from point A to point B to bediverted to pump a smaller amount of water from point Bto point C. Here is how this “water hammer” works (referto Figures 1 and 2).
