Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) are increasingly used for amplifying multi-channel (WDM) signals. In conjunction with this effort, an intensive discussion on suitable and economical test methods is being carried out in the lightwave communications industry. An important issue for EDFA testing in WDM environments is the use of direct or indirect testing methods.Direct testing means that testing the gain and noise figure is carried out with essentially the same multi-wavelength source as in the real communication system. This is an accurate, but expensive solution considering the large number of channels projected for the new WDM communication systems.
